Building a Meditation for the Draconic Current
By A. V. Drakonis
There is a feeling that accompanies the draconic current when it begins to move in earnest through a ritual chamber. The current moves through the spine, through the dream body, through you and through your space. It is not always heat, though often it is; I have felt it as a pressure, I have felt it as a cold. It is not always terror, though fear does sometimes arrive first. Something colossal lifted its head in the dark and recognises you.
When your practice has become noisy and overcomplicated, meditation is the best place to return. And yes, even experienced operators must return. I often return.
Understand what you are asking for when you seek to meditate on the Draconic Current.
The draconic current amplifies certain qualities within the operator: sovereignty, ambition, disciplined instinct, psychic sight, resilience and the willingness to shed old skins. It can also stir shadow material (ego inflation, wrath, obsession and spiritual arrogance) if the magician is not maintaining spiritual hygiene. I also recommend physical hygiene of both the body and your space when working with spirits, as good general practice. We are mages in the twenty-first century, not in the dark ages.
Do not leap at once into invocation, possession, trance flight, dream gates, blood-warm power, scales in the mind, gold in the bones, all of it. Do not want the dramatic manifestations before you have trained the vessel. You want the dragon before building the mountain. But intensity is not the same thing as attainment.
A dragon current meditation should do four things.
-
First: anchor the body.
-
Second: awaken the inner image-field.
-
Third: call the current without grovelling.
-
Fourth: close cleanly, so the operator returns to ordinary consciousness with force intact rather than drifting.
I have seen people open themselves beautifully and close themselves abysmally. Then they wonder why they cannot sleep. Sloppy exits make for astrally adrift mages.
The purpose of this meditation is the deliberate arrangement of body, breath, image and intention so that your subtle field aligns with the current of this ancient greatness.
You need a place where you will not be interrupted.
A seat or cushion that allows the spine to remain upright.
At least one object that signifies the draconic current. Now as for this, I acknowledge we dragon mages tend to like hoarding shiny things. So surely you have something already. This can be a dragon image, a stone, a candle, a sigil, a piece of jewellery, a statuette. It doesn’t have to be beautiful or perfect. Draw a dragon if you want. Use a dragon token from Dungeons and Dragons. Anything that points your psyche in the right direction. I use a ceramic dragon with a labradorite I put on it to amplify its energy. Then my athame, which is peak mall ninja, has a dragon on it. Embrace the dragon tosh!
I prefer low light over darkness or daylight. Candlelight if possible. One flame is enough. Safety first!
You may also use incense. Incense is optional. Dragon’s blood resin is an obvious companion, but frankincense and myrrh work beautifully if you want something temple-like. The scent is not there to impress spirits. It is there to condition the bodymind into ritual recognition. Be consistent with your choice of incense to create the mental link.
Before beginning, perform a brief cleansing or banishing. A simple spoken declaration is sufficient:
“I clear this space of all stagnant, hostile and irrelevant influence. Only that which accords with my will, my protection and the highest lawful expression of the draconic current may remain.”
Or use the banishing ritual of your choice.
Then shield. Always shield. Visualise a sphere of dark gold, black fire or iridescent scales surrounding you. Pick one form and use it repeatedly over time. Repetition breeds strength. Just like your choice of incense.
Establish intention. A meditation becomes stronger when it has a singular purpose. Do not sit down with a dozen motives. Choose one. Voice your intention before you begin.
The body posture is simple. Sit upright. Spine straight. Hands resting on thighs or folded over the solar plexus if that feels more natural. Feet flat on the floor if seated in a chair, or legs crossed if on a cushion. Comfort matters, but not so much that you become dreamy. Do not lie down. The draconic current responds well to dignity. Not limp passivity. Your body is your altar. Let it become still. Once so, move to your breathing.
Breath is one key to meditation trance. Controlling the rhythm of it will gain you entry. Begin with a measured breath cycle. Use box breathing.
Inhale for four
Hold for four
Exhale for four
Hold for four
Alter the number to suit your lung strength. The ratio is what matters. 1,1,1,1. I usually do four, but while I was recovering from Covid, I will also use three, and this works just as well. Repeat until the mind begins to settle.
Then shift, if you wish, into a fire-breath pattern better suited to draconic work:
Inhale through the nose and imagine drawing up power from beneath you, from the deep earth, from the hidden fire.
Inhale for eight seconds now. Hold for eight.
Exhale through the mouth, pushing your stomach muscles to exhale forcefully, and imagine that power rising through the spine, spreading through the chest, throat and brow.
Exhale for twelve. Hold for as long as you comfortably can.
If you have altered the timing to suit your lung strength, the ratio is now 2,2:3,3+.
After several rounds, sense that the spine itself is becoming a channel, a column. This is where things start to click. You might feel where you thought you were sitting straight before, now your body adjusts your posture even further. If so, trust your instinct.
Enter the inner landscape. Create the field of contact. Close your eyes.
This is one of my preferred pathworkings for draconic attunement. Use it as written or adapt it to your own practice once you understand its bones. The aim of pathworking is a repeated sequence of visuals that journey you to the domain of a specific entity.
See yourself standing on a black mountain at twilight.
The sky is deep indigo.
Stars burn cold above you.
The wind is slow and immense.
Beneath your feet, the rock is warm.
Far below, rivers of fire move within the earth.
Before you stands a colossal stone archway, ancient and scaled with age.
Beyond it is a cavern lit by red-gold light.
The air tastes of iron and storm.
You step forward.
Each footfall echoes.
You enter the cavern.
At its centre lies a vast coiled presence, not fully seen, only sensed.
Eyes open in the dark.
Ancient. Intelligent. Measuring you.
Pause there.
Do not rush to make the dragon speak. One of the great follies of modern occultism is forcing the imaginal too quickly, shoving “messages” into the silence because the ego cannot bear not to be entertained.
Instead, feel.
Feel the pressure in the room.
Feel the gaze.
Feel your own energy body reacting.
Where does the current touch you first… chest, brow, belly, spine?
Let the dragon remain partly hidden if that is how it appears. Real contact is often fragmentary at first. A wing. A breath. An eye. A sense of scale. Trust that.
Once the image stabilises, speak inwardly or aloud:
“Ancient draconic current, primordial fire of power and wisdom,
I open myself to your presence in balance, discipline and strength.
Let me know you rightly.
Let me receive only what serves my ascent, my sovereignty and my becoming.”
Then be silent and listen. Do not surrender before this power, but heed its wisdom, after all it is why you came!
Do not demand spectacle. Presence is enough. Frankly, the craving for fireworks is one of the beginner’s diseases. You are not here as a beginner. But you are here as a learner.
It might speak. You might visualise the dragon breathing a current of fire, light or shadow into you. Often this enters through the brow, heart or mouth. Sometimes the dragon coils around the body in the inner vision, creating an initiatory enclosure. Sometimes it says nothing. Sometimes your spine fills with force.
The contact may be subtle. Do not obsess. What comes is what comes.
What to do during the contact phase
Your aim is to simply remain with the experience. The longer you can hold focus on it, the better.
Observe without clutching. If sensations arise, note them. Heat, tingling, emotional release, tears, pressure in the forehead, expansion in the chest, an urge to straighten the spine, a strange nobility, a flicker of fear. These are all common.
If a word, symbol or message emerges, receive it. Write it down after.
If the meditation deepens, ask one question. A useful one is: “What must I cultivate to bear this current more fully?” That question alone can change a practice.
The most important part: receive without losing yourself. You are training your vessel to hold more voltage. The draconic current is powerful, but the aim is not to become psychologically unmoored. You are not trying to dissolve into some vague astral grandeur and return unable to function. Maintain a thread of awareness.
When the contact feels complete, thank the current.
“I give thanks for what has been revealed and transmitted.
Let all that has entered me now settle in right order.
Let what is not mine depart.
Let what is mine remain in power and peace.”
See the dragon or current withdrawing slightly, not vanishing entirely, but receding into its realm. See yourself stepping back through the stone archway. Feel the mountain beneath your feet again. Retreat backwards through the path you worked. If you followed mine:
The cavern dims…
The footfalls echo…
The air tastes of iron and storm…
You pass through a colossal stone archway…
Rivers of fire move through the earth…
The rock is warm beneath your feet…
The wind is slow…
The stars burn cold above in a deep indigo sky…
You are standing on a black mountain…
You feel yourself in your ordinary body…
The room is around you.
The floor beneath you.
Your breath within you.
Then ground.
Place both hands on the body, ideally chest and lower abdomen. Breathe deeply. Imagine excess force flowing downward into the earth where it is stabilised.
As the pathworking has you return through the same images, so should your meditation circle you back to the beginning. Thus, to complete your ritual, Perform a banishing. This is not an insult to the current. It is good magical housekeeping, and the mages who balk at banishing afterwards are usually the same ones who later wonder why their dreams turn feverish.
Eat something afterwards if needed. Drink some water. You just reached out to a current typically of fire, so yes, rehydrate! You probably need to drink more water. I know I drink too much coffee and Red Bull and not enough water.
Record the experience immediately, even if only in fragments. Especially in fragments, really. I gain a lot when I read the fragments of my piecemeal visions later, when I have more information to put them together.
Rinse and repeat. Build your meditation through repetition. Use the same imagery. Train the psyche to recognise the road. A path walked often becomes easier to enter and stronger in effect. That is one of the hidden mechanics of pathworking.
Signs the meditation is working
You may notice increased confidence, stronger boundaries, clearer intuition, more vivid dreams, improved magical focus and a subtle sense of inner regality. You may also find that what is weak in your life begins to show cracks. The draconic current does not love stagnation. It exposes falsity with a rather pitiless elegance. So do not invoke dragon fire and then complain that your excuses have combusted. This current can enrich, fortify and initiate, but only if you are willing to be remade. That is the bargain, implicit though it often is. Invoke dragon fire often enough and the structures in your life built on cowardice will begin to crack.
You will discover very quickly whether you were ready.
