Protecting the Astral Temple

AV Drakonis speaks about the astral temple and how to defend it

The astral temple is my sanctuary amidst the nebulous realms beyond the veil! Protecting it is no trivial matter; the astral realms are as rife with predatory forces as any haunted forest or forbidden library. Like any construct in the realm beyond, an astral temple is a fortified projection of the mind itself, and thus it must be shielded with equal precision and strength. If you fail to do this, your astral temple may attract parasites and other unsavoury types in the astral realm.

An astral temple is a vital component of practice for those in the so-called broom closet and will enable you to keep your rituals entirely away from human eyes.

Here’s how I go about it:

1. Establish a Perimeter of Will

Protection begins with mental fortitude. The most effective barrier in the astral is one powered by unwavering intention. Begin by envisioning your temple’s outer boundaries, whether it’s stone walls, crystalline barriers, or even the teeth of an ancient dragon. Feel these boundaries solidify with your intent. Once you’ve projected them, speak a protective affirmation aloud. I often use something like, “By my will, I forge this wall. None but those I permit shall cross.”

2. Shielding with Draconic Fire

Draconic energy—fiery, ancient, and fiercely protective—is an excellent shield. Summon a draconic guardian or, if you’re attuned enough, manifest the fire yourself. Imagine the outermost layer of your astral temple encased in a burning, purifying flame that scorches any hostile force that dares to approach. This flame is no ordinary fire; it’s an energy of both destruction and renewal, ensuring that your space remains potent and untouchable.

3. Sigils and Wards of Binding

Sigils, glyphs, and wards are the practical symbols that bolster this defense. I draw on elemental forces here, perhaps inscribing sigils of earth to ground the space, or air to create a boundary that disperses foreign energy. You may use your own sigils or those from a respected grimoire (though avoid the rigid Solomonic approach, which is outdated in my opinion). Custom symbols that resonate with your own soul are far more potent. I layer these sigils around key entry points—portals, doors, and windows.

You may also choose to apply sigils to entry points of your real life domain!

4. Invoke Guardian Spirits or Daemons

I often call upon a daemon or spirit that resonates with protection. For example, Astaroth, if approached respectfully, can serve as a vigilant guide, guarding the threshold against any intruder. Choose wisely: each entity has its own strengths and temperament, so a fitting daemon or ancestral spirit will form an impenetrable watch around your sanctuary. I will expand further on spirits you may evoke after the ritual instructions.

5. The Ritual of Energetic Cleansing

Regular cleansing is crucial. It’s no different than dusting the halls of a physical sanctuary. After any intensive working, I invoke a cleansing wave through visualization—often water, light, or fire—to purge any lingering residue of spirits or energies.

A brief incantation of, “I purify this space in fire, by water, by wind and stone” sweeps away lingering influences, leaving my temple purified, fortified, and resonant with my intent.

6. The Final Touch: A Golden Seal of Sovereignty

As the last layer, I visualize a golden light encircling the entire temple. This seal, a radiant orb of my own essence, binds the temple to me, ensuring it’s an extension of my consciousness alone. Any spirit attempting to breach must reckon with the entirety of my will contained in that seal—a final barrier that dissuades all but the most determined entities. If I wish to turn people away from even seeing the temple, I then imagine that golden light becoming a golden mist, so that anything that would attempt to touch it finds only mist.

A fortified temple is your fortress in the astral, and if you do it right, your mind and will shall remain unassailable within its walls.

Now, I promised a list of possibilities for guardian spirits to evoke.

Daemons for the Thelemite and Hermetic Mage

For those aligned with Thelemic or Hermetic principles, daemons serve as powerful guardians due to their balanced dual nature—part raw force, part divine wisdom. Consider the following:

  • Astaroth: As I mentioned, Astaroth embodies wisdom and protection through understanding. She makes an excellent guardian for those who seek a balance between command and communion, adept at warding off chaotic energies with a dignified yet fierce power. Ideal for those who approach the demonic with respect rather than dominance. I often work with Astaroth and trust her with my space.
  • King Paimon: A demon of authority and knowledge, King Paimon is protective of those who seek knowledge beyond the physical. He bestows clarity of mind and guards against manipulative forces. For the Hermetic magician who values mental resilience, King Paimon is a steadfast sentinel at the astral threshold. Of course, King Paimon respects those who do their own work, so he may just as well grant you a spiritual familiar that you can task with your own skill to guard your astral space! I often work with King Paimon.

Ancestors for the Ancestral Practitioner

Those who practice within their ancestral or cultural lineage often find that familial spirits are potent guardians in the astral realm. These guardians hold both a protective duty and a personal tie, making them incredibly loyal and attuned to the practitioner.

  • Ancestral Guides: You might call upon ancestors who were protectors or warriors in their own lives. These spirits retain their vigilance and affinity for safeguarding the family line. Perform a small ritual with an offering—tobacco, wine, or items tied to the family line—and ask the ancestral protector to watch over your astral sanctuary.
  • Spirit of the Hearth: If your ancestral protector was known for family care or for keeping the home safe, you may visualize their presence as a comforting warmth, much like a fire in the hearth. They will guard with a subtlety and strength that is rooted in love rather than aggression, ideal for those whose magic is more nurturing than combative. This technique is also effective if you do not know a specific ancestor to call upon. Not everyone has a fond relationship with their family, yet still the power of your ancestral line may provide a protector for your temple.

Dragons for the Draconic Practitioner

Dragons guard not only with raw power but with ancient, indomitable wisdom, recognizing threats before they even manifest.

  • The Guardian Dragon: For the draconic mage, this is a dragon you have bonded with personally through meditation, astral journey, or ritual. They are best summoned through your own sigil that connects to their energy. In my own practice, I visualise a dragon of onyx and fire surrounding my temple with wings spread wide, scorching away any intruder who dares come close. If you are new to dragons, visualize their essence encircling your temple until a specific dragon connects with you. You know who will serve best based on your own work with dragons.
  • Serpentine Gatekeeper: Not all dragons are fire and fury. Some, like the serpent dragons, are silent watchers and swift strikers, capable of silently deterring or devouring astral intruders without a trace. These guardians work best for those attuned to shadow work and the deep mysteries of transformation, and the serpentine dragons make for excellent ninjas to guard your temple.

Angels for the Ceremonial Mage

For those who resonate with angelic forces, archangels and lesser angels bring a stabilising, radiant protection. Angels are excellent for those who follow structured magickal traditions, including Hermeticism and certain forms of ceremonial magick.

  • Archangel Michael: Michael is the archetypal guardian angel, wielding a sword of pure light that cuts through darkness. He is a fearless protector and excellent for those with a deeply rooted belief in purity, order, and courage. Summon him with visualisations of his blue flame, encircling your temple with strength and clarity.
  • Archangel Gabriel: If your astral temple is a place of communication or learning, Gabriel brings a defensive aura that is also conducive to intuition and prophecy. Visualise him standing by your temple’s entrance, warding off any energies that would muddle or interfere with your psychic clarity.

Totems for the Nature-Based Mage

Nature-based practitioners, be they animists, shamans, or Wiccan magicians, may find animal totems and nature spirits to be well-suited protectors. Totemic guardians are fierce and wise, each animal carrying its unique qualities.

  • Wolf Spirit: Wolves are fierce protectors of the pack and natural sentinels of the astral forest. A wolf spirit can sniff out any intruder before they come close and can channel both subtlety and ferocity as needed. This guardian is excellent for those who prefer grounding energies and respect the balance of nature.
  • Raven Spirit: The raven brings an aura of mystery and foresight. Not only does it guard against direct threats, but it also warns you of tricksters and ill intentions. A suitable guardian for those who wish to maintain a highly attuned, clairvoyant temple space.

The Egregore for the Chaos Magician

For the chaos magician, the egregore—a thoughtform created through focused will and sustained energy—serves as a versatile guardian. Since egregores are extensions of your own mind, they’re highly adaptable and can be “programmed” to counter specific types of intruders.

  • The Sentinel Egregore: This egregore can be crafted with a purpose-built form, such as a faceless warrior or a shadow entity, that stands at your temple’s entrance. Program it with a set of instructions, such as repelling certain entities or sending you a warning signal when an unwanted presence approaches.
  • Chimeric Guardian: For those feeling particularly ambitious, construct a chimeric egregore that blends attributes of several creatures—a dragon’s breath, a wolf’s senses, a raven’s intellect. This multi-faceted egregore becomes a complex protector, suited to handle various threats in a single astral form.

Constructs for the Technomancer

Ah, for those who dance between code and cosmos… technomancers can create guardian constructs with the characteristics of daemons (in the technological sense) to guard their temples. These too are a form of egregore servitor. Of course you can’t literally set a Raspberry pi to guard your astral temple, but you can give your servitors the appearance of a digital construct so they serve in a predictable technological fashion rather than taking on the pseudo-sentience of an entity based on a lifeform.

  • A Digital Guardian: Visualise an AI-like spirit, similar to a firewall, stationed around the perimeter. This construct functions much like a computer daemon, detecting “viruses” in the astral plane—anything out of alignment with your intent or energy. Program this guardian to autonomously repel such intrusions and alert you to unusual activity.
  • The Silicon Spectre: A shadowy guardian with ties to both the spiritual and technological realms. This spectral figure maintains the border between your temple and external forces, allowing only those with a “digital signature” (i.e: your set password of intentions) to enter. You can bind this spectre to your physical body as well, giving it the instruction to ping you when something shows up in the astral.
